When Global Travels Meet Gulf Coast Living: Inside Our Turtle Bale Path Project

When our clients came to Douglas Bock Architects with a vision for their Alys Beach home, they had one clear intention: build the ultimate entertainer's retreat — a place where resort-style living, world-class design, and the Gulf Coast's relaxed spirit could coexist under one roof.

The result is Turtle Bale Path, a home that feels less like a Florida beach house and more like a private riad tucked into one of the South's most architecturally deliberate communities.

Designed for the Art of Entertaining

From the moment you approach the property, the home signals something different. A striking geometric entry door set within a crisp arched surround is flanked by white-rendered walls and oversized planters — a quiet but deliberate nod to North African architecture. Inside, every space has been conceived around the flow of gathering, moving, and living well.

At the heart of the home, the kitchen anchors daily life with custom wood cabinetry, a bold blue-and-white tile backsplash, premium appliances, and an expansive island that bridges the living and dining areas. It's a kitchen that invites conversation — designed as much for the guest lingering at the counter as for the host behind it.

A Courtyard That Redefines Indoor-Outdoor Living

The central courtyard pool is where Turtle Bale Path earns its resort credentials. Framed by intricate tilework and arched openings that echo the home's Moroccan references, the courtyard seamlessly blends the interior and exterior. An integrated bar and grilling area ensure that entertaining never requires a walk indoors. Lounge seating, lanterns, and layered textiles complete the atmosphere — effortlessly transitioning from afternoon swim to evening gathering.

A detached casita offers guests their own private world: a full bedroom and bath that preserves both hospitality and privacy.

Above It All: The Rooftop Experience

Few homes in Alys Beach offer what Turtle Bale Path delivers overhead. The rooftop terrace is a destination in its own right — a second heated pool, fire pit seating, an outdoor bar and grill, and sweeping views across the community. Whether it's a morning coffee ritual or a late-night gathering under the stars, the rooftop transforms the everyday into something worth savoring.

Globally Inspired Interiors by Melanie Turner

To bring the interior vision to life, DBA collaborated with interior designer Melanie Turner, whose own travels through Morocco shaped the material palette. Layered texture is the through line: hand-knotted rugs, handcrafted lanterns, patterned tilework, rattan furnishings, and artisan ceramics create rooms that feel collected rather than decorated. The result is a home with real warmth and cultural depth — interiors that reward curiosity. Bathrooms are equally considered: freestanding soaking tubs, gold fixtures, patterned tile floors, and oversized windows make every space feel like a retreat within a retreat.

Building Alys Beach as It Was Meant to Be Built

Alys Beach's architectural guidelines were designed to create a cohesive, pedestrian-scaled community rooted in Caribbean vernacular traditions — white stucco, courtyard living, and a walkable, human-centered scale. Turtle Bale Path honors and expands on those principles, layering in a global sensibility that brings the community's design ethos into a fully modern residential context. It is exactly the kind of project that defines what we do at Douglas Bock Architects: listening carefully to how clients want to live, then designing the architecture around that life.
